BRINGING SUNDAY HOME THIS WEEK

On Sunday, Charlotte encouraged us to make loving-kindness our attitude toward others and take bold action to drive out forces of violence and hate.  For a deeper look at the Gospel text, read this commentary by Kendra A. Mohn.
Go deeper:
  • Reflect: Where have you experienced God's abundant love? What is one way you can trust God? What is God's voice calling you to this week?
  • Explore the Lessons: The Working Preacher offers commentary and resources for study on each of the texts for each week. Go beyond the sermon text and learn more about each of the lessons read this week.
  • Weekly Devotional: Faith@Home, an educational arm of the Episcopal Church, provides weekly devotional activities for all ages based on the lectionary texts for each week. There are prompts for Adults and Children, Adults and Teens, and Adults and Adults to discuss with one another.

LOOKING AHEAD
  • Prepare your heart for this coming Sunday's worship by taking a "God Pause." These daily devotions written by Luther Seminary alumni prepare us for meaningful worship by looking forward to the coming Sunday's lectionary passages.
  • Find background information on the Gospel text for the coming Sunday and activity plans for all ages at Sunday Connection provided by Loyola Press. (Note: Loyola Press follows the Catholic lectionary, so some of the readings may be different from the Revised Common Lectionary used in the Episcopal Church)

UNDERSTANDING THE CHURCH YEAR
A certain cycle of festivals and seasons has emerged in Christian history and is now observed throughout the ecumenical church. Some of these events (i.e. Pentecost, Holy Week and Epiphany) can be traced to the earliest centuries of Christian practice; others (e.g. Trinity Sunday and Christ the King) developed later in the history of the church. There are now six seasons of the church: Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time 1, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time 2. Currently, we are in the Ordinary Time 2, which consists of the Sundays following Pentecost until Christ the King Sunday on November 22. The traditional liturgical color for this season is green.
