TALKING TO CHILDREN ABOUT RACE

Picture

THE CHURCH AND RACIAL RECONCILIATION

We believe that God created and loves everyone. As such, racial division and injustice is a matter that the church must face and work to correct. The Episcopal Church has put together some resources for further learning and engagement. These can be found here along with a video message from Presiding Bishop Michael Curry.
There are many resources for talking about race with children. Here are some good ones from a variety of sources.
  • Vibrant Faith at Home has created an activity to help begin caring conversations about race and diversity.
  • Ten Tips for Talking to Kids About Race. EmbraceRace is a multiracial community that seeks to develop and share best practices for raising and caring for children in the context of race.
  • Brightly has collated a list of books and resources for both children and adults to help inform and begin conversations about racial reconciliation.
  •  If you are unsure if a conversation about race and diversity is appropriate for your younger children, Parents.com has developed a guide based on age and development of when and how to have these important conversations.
  • NPR interviewed Jennifer Harvey,  author of Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America about tips for White parents to talk with their children. That conversation, and associated resources, can be found here.
